Honeymoon Part I | Rome, Orvieto and Florence, Italy
Although we kicked off our honeymoon by flying into Rome, Orvieto was our real first stop. This quiet, intriguing little town was recommended to us by our sweet friend Amelia who visited there not too long ago and I couldn’t be more thankful that she told us about it.
Orvieto is a hilltop town in Central Italy, and honestly I believe I could have spent an entire week here learning every inch of this town. There was so much character packed into this tiny place, and although you can walk from one end to the other in no time, there is so much more culture and little side streets that we wanted to make sure to soak up every bit of this town that we could when we were there.
The view from our Orvieto AirBnb was amazing. All of the rooftops and tiny streets, it's such a beautiful amazing town. I loved how that city was wrapped into such a small space, but it never felt small.
I honestly can’t say enough about this perfect little place that we called home while we were in this town.
Our airbnb host were unimaginably accommodating and sweet to us. They left us a bottle of Orvieto-grown wine for us (hands down the best wine we had the entire trip) and they even took the time to drive out to the outskirts of the city to show us the best view of the town. The language barrier made it impossible to explain how thankful we were for their hospitality, but I think the giant smile on our faces said it all.
FLORENCE, ITALY
Our next stop was Florence.
We only had one night in this city but it was just what we needed to recharge from all the travel. We took the first bit of the afternoon to explore the city and just leisurely poke around, followed by some much needed down time in our airbnb that I fell IN LOVE with from the moment we saw it, and I just couldn’t get enough of.
After winding down for a bit, we headed back out to explore the city in a different light. I think this was one of my favorite memories from our trip, just strolling through Florence at night with the love of my life. It felt surreal.
It was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen; the city lights reflecting off of the water, music flowing through the streets, and seeing the busy city I met earlier relax into the night. I felt like we were able to really take it all in and explore without the crowds.
This is Judith and Holofernes, a Bronze statue made by Donatello around 1460. It depicts Judith assassinating the general Holofernes (who is speculated to have been her rapist.) There are lots of different paintings of Judith and her story was told in secret for years. If you look below, you can see her in the square among several other statues, hers was one of the smallest.
